Athletic friends, three days, and a rainy season that is winding down. Here is how to use them.

La Fortuna rewards people who start early. The rivers, the waterfalls, and the volcano all sit within about 30 minutes of town, so you can fit three big days in without much driving.
Day 1: Rafting and a waterfall climb
Book white water rafting for the morning. The Río Balsa near La Fortuna runs Class II to III and works for any group. If your crew wants a harder run, the Río Sarapiquí runs Class III to IV. It takes a longer drive, so plan on most of the day.
In the afternoon, hike down to the La Fortuna Waterfall. It is about 500 steps each way, and you can swim at the bottom. Your legs will feel the climb back up.
Day 2: Canyoning and the volcano
Canyoning is the best use of a morning for an athletic group. With a guide, you rappel down waterfalls in a river canyon. Operators in La Fortuna run it daily, and the rain keeps the falls full.
Spend the afternoon in Arenal Volcano National Park. The trails cross old lava flows, and the views of the cone are the reason to go. You cannot climb Arenal itself.
Day 3: Bridges, zip lines, and hot springs
Do the hanging bridges and zip lines in the morning. Clouds build in the afternoon, and the canopy is clearer early.
End the trip in the hot springs. Tabacón, Baldi, and Ecotermales all work. A long soak is the best recovery after three hard days.
What the rain does
October is one of the wettest months in La Fortuna. November eases off, with about 6 to 7 inches of rain for the month. Mornings often start clear, and the heavy rain arrives in the afternoon. Put every big activity before lunch.
Rafting and canyoning run in the rain, and high rivers make the rapids faster. Operators cancel when a river rises too high, so keep one day flexible. Pack a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, and shoes you don't mind soaking. A dry bag keeps your phone safe.
Book rafting, canyoning, and the zip lines a few days ahead. Leave the waterfall and the hot springs open so you can swap days when the weather turns.
