4 Days in Costa Rica Flying into Liberia — What a Hiking Couple Should Actually Do
Monteverde or Manuel Antonio? If you love hiking more than the beach, the answer is clear. Here's the full 4-day plan.

Four days is tight. Flying into Liberia makes it tighter — you're landing on the northwest Pacific coast, and both Monteverde and Manuel Antonio are significant drives from there.
But tight doesn't mean bad. Four days done right beats seven days done wrong. And if you and your partner love hiking more than the beach, the decision between these two destinations is actually straightforward.
Here's the honest answer and the full plan.
Monteverde or Manuel Antonio? For Hikers, It's Not Close
Manuel Antonio is beautiful. The national park has howler monkeys, sloths, and a beach that photographs extraordinarily well. It also has crowds, heat, and the kind of visitor volume that means you're sharing every trail with a tour group.
The hiking itself is good but not exceptional. The trails are short, flat, and designed for visitors who want wildlife and a swim, not elevation and effort.
Monteverde is a completely different proposition for hikers. The cloud forest trails are genuine — varied terrain, elevation changes, wildlife that requires patience and attention to find. The hanging bridges give you the canopy from above. The Santa Elena Reserve gives you the cloud forest with significantly fewer people than the main reserve. A night hike shows you a version of the forest that most visitors never see.
For a couple who hike — Monteverde is the answer. Not even close.
The One Honest Catch
Flying into Liberia and going to Monteverde is not the most logical routing. Liberia is in Guanacaste — beach country. Monteverde is 3.5 to 4 hours southeast. You're driving away from the coast and into the mountains.
That drive is actually part of the experience. The road through Sardinal and down to the Interamerican Highway passes through classic Costa Rican countryside — cattle ranches, small towns, the landscape changing as you climb into the cloud zone. But it does eat into your first day.
Two options for handling this:
Rent a car at the Liberia airport and drive yourself. The Monteverde road — the last stretch from the main highway — is unpaved and notorious. A 4WD is not optional. Allow 4 hours minimum and use Waze the entire way. Never Google Maps in Costa Rica.
Book a private transfer. A driver who knows the Monteverde road handles the logistics while you both arrive relaxed. Contact Arturo Sáenz-García — bilingual, six-time Tripadvisor award winner, available from LIR airport. WhatsApp: wa.me/50688221921(opens in new tab)
The 4-Day Plan
Arrive Liberia — Drive to Monteverde
Pick up your rental car or meet your transfer at LIR. Head southeast toward Monteverde — 3.5 to 4 hours depending on the road condition that day. The last stretch is unpaved mountain road. Take it slow, enjoy the views, and arrive before dark.
Check into your accommodation in Santa Elena — the town closest to the reserves. Eat somewhere local that evening. La Cantina or Morpho's Restaurant in Santa Elena are both solid. Go to bed early. Tomorrow starts at 7am.
Cloud Forest Hanging Bridges — Morning
At Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges — except you're in Monteverde now so the equivalent is the Cloud Forest Reserve hanging bridges or the Selvatura hanging bridges depending on which operator you book through. Get there when it opens. The cloud forest at 7am with mist on the canopy and no other groups around is the version worth experiencing.
Spend the morning here — 3 to 4 hours. Birdwatching is exceptional. The Resplendent Quetzal has been spotted in these forests — one of the most striking birds in the Americas. A guide who knows where to look changes this experience completely.
Afternoon — rest or explore Santa Elena town. Good coffee, local sodas, a farmers market if the timing aligns. The pace slows down after the morning hike and that's by design.
Santa Elena Reserve — Less Visited, Equally Beautiful
The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is Monteverde's quieter alternative. Managed by the local high school, it has excellent trails, similar biodiversity, and dramatically fewer visitors than the main Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
For hikers who want genuine trail time — go here on day 3. The Caño Negro trail goes deep into the forest with real elevation change. The viewpoint on a clear morning shows Arenal Volcano in the distance.
Evening option — book a guided night walk. The cloud forest after dark is a completely different ecosystem. Red-eyed tree frogs, sleeping birds, stick insects, kinkajous. Two hours with a guide who knows the forest and you'll see things that don't exist anywhere else. Worth booking in advance.
Morning Hike — Drive Back to Liberia
One last morning hike before you leave. The Chomogo Trail in the main Cloud Forest Reserve is the highest point in the area — 1,680 meters — with panoramic views when the cloud breaks. It's 3.4 kilometers round trip with real elevation. Leave by 6:30am, finish by 9am, pack up and drive.
The drive back to Liberia airport is 3.5 to 4 hours. Allow extra time. Check-in for international flights at LIR typically requires 2.5 to 3 hours before departure. Do the math on your flight time and leave Monteverde accordingly.
What This Itinerary Delivers
Four days, two nights of proper hiking in genuine cloud forest, one night walk, the hanging bridges at opening time, and the Santa Elena Reserve without the main reserve crowds.
No beach days — because you said you prefer hiking. No wasted half-days driving between too many destinations. No Manuel Antonio, which would have added 5+ hours of driving and given you shorter, flatter trails in significantly more heat and humidity.
This is four days used correctly for the trip you actually want to take.
The Practical Details
Accommodation in Santa Elena — budget to mid-range options within walking distance of both reserves. Avoid booking in the village of Monteverde itself which is further from Santa Elena and adds unnecessary driving between activities.
Rental car — 4WD required. The unpaved road into Monteverde is manageable in a standard SUV but genuinely difficult in a regular sedan. Economy Car Rental near LIR has full fleet. Contact Jimmy M. directly on WhatsApp for rates: +506 6215-0266(opens in new tab).
Weather — Monteverde has its own microclimate. Rain can happen any month. Pack a lightweight waterproof layer regardless of when you're traveling. The cloud forest in light rain is actually spectacular — just different.
Altitude — Monteverde sits at 1,440 meters. It's noticeably cooler than the coast. Pack layers you didn't need at the Liberia airport.
