La Fortuna Done Right — What's Worth It, What to Skip, and Why You Should Get Up Early
Sky Adventures, Tabacón twice, hanging bridges at 7am, homemade chocolate at Don Jorge, and the honest truth about the town itself. Here's what actually made the trip.

The best advice anyone gave us before our first La Fortuna trip was simple. Get up early. The sun rises around 5am and sets around 6pm. Use the light while it's available. Plan your days around it. Everything else falls into place when you do.
Here's what actually made the trip — and what didn't.
Sky Adventures — Go Do It
Sky Adventures Arenal is worth every colón. The zip line experience is genuinely thrilling — the kind of thing that sounds scary until you're flying over the rainforest canopy and wondering why you were nervous. First-timers will love it. People who've done zip lines elsewhere will still love it. The setup is professional, the views are extraordinary, and the guides know what they're doing.
Book it. Don't negotiate with yourself about whether it's worth it.
The Hanging Bridges — Get There by 7am
Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is one of the most beautiful things in the La Fortuna area. Walking suspension bridges over the cloud forest canopy with Arenal volcano visible through the trees when the sky is clear.
The catch — get there by 7am. By 9am the tour groups start arriving. By 10am it's crowded in a way that changes the experience completely. The early morning version — quiet, mist on the canopy, wildlife active before the heat — is a completely different place from the midday version.
Lost Iguana Resort sits right by Mistico and is a genuinely good hotel choice for anyone who wants to be positioned perfectly for an early bridge visit. If you're planning the bridges as a priority — which you should be — consider staying there the night before.
The Hot Springs — Dedicate a Full Day
One way or another, go to the hot springs. Not as a two-hour add-on. As the main event for a full day.
Tabacón Grand Thermal Resort is world class. The springs fed directly by the Arenal volcano are extraordinary — multiple pools at different temperatures, beautifully landscaped, genuinely unlike anything else in the country. Two visits confirms it. Be honest with yourself though — the hotel rooms at Tabacón are a different story. The springs justify the day pass completely. The room rate is harder to justify when nearby properties like Mountain Paradise offer solid value and you can still visit the springs during the day.
If Tabacón is beyond the budget, Baldi Hot Springs is the alternative everyone recommends. Multiple pools, lively atmosphere, more affordable. People who've been consistently report loving it. The springs are the point — the venue is secondary.
Go. Stay for hours. Plan nothing else that afternoon.
Don Jorge Coffee and Chocolate Tour
This one surprised people on their first trip in the best possible way. The Don Jorge farm tour combines coffee and chocolate — and the chocolate-making session is genuinely memorable. The guides are welcoming, the experience is hands-on, and the homemade chocolate you make yourself is remarkably good.
Two to three hours is the right amount of time. It's not an all-day experience but it's a genuinely worthwhile two hours that most visitors remember long after the zip line adrenaline has faded. Kids love it. Adults who thought they were too old for a farm tour change their minds.
Where to Eat — Skip the Town Center
Soda y Restaurante Rodríguez and Red Frog Cafe are both worth knowing about. Breakfast or lunch, both are solid. The kind of places that have regulars because they deserve them.
The town center of La Fortuna itself is honest about what it is — souvenir shops, tourist-facing restaurants, activity desks. It's not unpleasant. It's just not why anyone comes here. The activities around the town are the draw, not the town itself.
Walk one block off the main strip for any meal. The prices change, the food gets better, and you start eating where the locals eat.
The Hotels
Three worth knowing about based on real experience:
Lost Iguana Resort — right next to Mistico, perfect positioning for an early hanging bridges visit. Good experience, good value for the location.
Mountain Paradise Hotel — solid value, comfortable, good experience. If Tabacón's room rate gives you pause, this is the kind of property that lets you spend the savings on another day at the springs.
Tabacón Grand Thermal Resort — the springs are extraordinary. The hotel rooms are not quite at the same level as the price suggests. If budget is a consideration, the day pass to the springs and a room nearby is a smarter allocation.
The Practical Things Nobody Tells You
Sun rises at 5am. Sun sets at 6pm. Plan around this. The best versions of the hanging bridges, the waterfall, and the volcano views all happen early. Travelers who sleep until 9am spend their whole trip chasing what the early risers already saw.
Driving after dark in La Fortuna is manageable but not ideal. Aim to be settled somewhere comfortable shortly after sunset. The evenings are for hot springs, quiet dinners, and recovering for another early start.
There are a million things to do in La Fortuna. Whatever combination you choose — if you get up early, go to the hot springs, walk the hanging bridges before the crowds, and eat one meal at a local soda — you will have had a great trip.
No matter what, you'll have the trip of your life.
