What's Actually Worth Doing in La Fortuna — And What to Skip
We're based in Atenas, 90 minutes from La Fortuna. Our advisors have driven that road more times than we can count. Here's what's actually worth your time.

La Fortuna has more activity options than almost anywhere else in Costa Rica. That's both the appeal and the problem.
Walk down the main street and every other storefront is an activity desk offering the same tours at the same inflated prices. It's loud, it's repetitive, and it makes the whole town feel like a theme park entrance rather than a genuine destination.
The actual experiences — the ones worth traveling to La Fortuna for — are all still there. You just need to know which ones they are, in what order, and how to book them without paying the tourist markup.
Here's what we tell our clients.
The Volcano
You don't hike the active cone — it's restricted. What you do instead is better.
The hanging bridges at Mistico Park put you at eye level with the rainforest canopy with Arenal visible through the trees. Morning is the only time to do this — clouds roll in by midday and the volcano disappears. Most visitors book it for the afternoon and wonder why they can't see anything.
The lava fields trail at Arenal National Park takes you across hardened lava flows from the 1968 eruption with unobstructed views of the cone. Flat, accessible, genuinely dramatic. This one works in the morning too.
La Fortuna Waterfall
70 meters of Pacific water dropping into a cold blue pool. One of the most visited attractions in the country — and still worth it if you do it right.
Get there before 9am. After that the tour groups arrive in buses and the experience changes completely. The hike down is steep. The hike back up is real exercise. There are 500 steps and they don't apologize for it. Worth every one.
Horseback Riding
The route through the rainforest toward Arenal Lake is one of the best horseback experiences in Costa Rica. Half-day, local operators, horses that actually know the trail. This is not a resort amenity — it is a genuine ride through working landscape. Book it with a local operator, not the activity desk at your hotel.
Mountain Biking
The back roads around La Fortuna and Arenal Lake are excellent for biking. Less crowded than the main tourist routes, genuinely beautiful, and a completely different pace from the group tour circuit. Half-day rental or guided — both work.
ATV Tours
Mud, jungle roads, and Arenal views from angles the hiking trails don't reach. Best done in the afternoon when the light hits the volcano and you're not competing with the morning tour crowd. One of the more fun half-days in the region.
Rainforest and Wildlife
Night hikes are where La Fortuna delivers something most travelers don't expect.
During the day the rainforest looks dense but quiet. After dark it becomes something completely different. Frogs on every leaf. Sloths moving through the canopy. Snakes, insects, bats. A guide who actually knows the forest — not just the path — makes this experience. Book one.
Butterfly Farm
A quieter, slower experience that most adventure-focused travelers underrate. Genuinely beautiful and more interesting than it sounds. Especially good with kids or on a half-day when everything else feels too physical.
Cocoa Farm Tour
One of the best cultural experiences in the region. You follow cacao from tree to finished chocolate bar. The local farms do this better than the resort-packaged versions — more authentic, better product, and a real conversation about what it takes to grow cacao in this climate. Budget two hours. Buy the chocolate before you leave.
Animal Preservation
Worth visiting specifically to see animals being rehabilitated rather than displayed for photos. La Fortuna has legitimate sanctuary options — ask your operator which ones actually operate as rescue centers rather than animal attractions. The distinction matters.
Hot Springs
The hot springs around Arenal are fed by volcanic activity and genuinely therapeutic. The resort pools are beautiful but expensive. The public pools — specifically Tabacón and the free hot springs along the river road — give you the same experience at a fraction of the price.
Ask us which ones to use. The answer changes depending on your budget and how much you care about crowds.
What to skip
The city center of La Fortuna itself.
The main street is exactly what it looks like — souvenir shops, overpriced restaurants, and activity desks selling the same tours at the same prices with the same commission built in. It's not dangerous, it's not unpleasant. It's just not the reason you came to Costa Rica.
Walk one block off the main strip and the town changes immediately. That's where the locals eat. That's where the honest prices are. That's where you find a soda with plastic chairs and Lizano sauce on the table serving a casado that costs ¢3,500 instead of the $18 version on the tourist menu.
One block. That's the entire difference.
