Limón's Airport Is Finally Getting Its Upgrade

Costa Rica just committed real money to Limón International Airport. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced a $40 million rebuild and expansion, with the goal of bringing international flights straight to the Caribbean coast for the first time in years.

What's Actually Changing

The current terminal sits in a spot prone to flooding during heavy rain. That's one of the main reasons the airport has stayed stuck at domestic-only service despite carrying an international designation for over a decade.

The first phase of the project calls for a new terminal built in a different part of the airfield, away from the flood risk. Planners also have the runway on the list, along with fire and security facilities needed to handle bigger commercial aircraft.

The government is hoping this eventually opens the door to nonstop flights from cities like Miami and Mexico City. No airline has committed to either route yet, so treat that part as a goal rather than a done deal.

Part of a Bigger Push

This isn't happening in isolation. Costa Rica announced it as one piece of a regional airport strategy that also touches Liberia's Daniel Oduber airport and the still-early-stage South Pacific airport planned near Sierpe de Osa. The government framed the package around building capacity for exports, investment, and jobs, not just tourism.

The timing lines up with a strong year for arrivals. Costa Rica logged just over 2 million visitors through July, up 6.4% over the same stretch last year. Canadian arrivals climbed even faster, up 24.4%.

What This Means If You're Planning a Caribbean Trip

For now, nothing changes at the ground level. Puerto Limón, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, and Manzanillo are still reached the way they always have been, by road from San José or by domestic flight through SANSA. No timeline has been released for when construction starts or when the new terminal opens.

If you're weighing a Caribbean coast trip against Guanacaste or the Central Pacific, this is worth watching rather than acting on. A direct flight into Limón would cut hours off the trip for anyone headed to the southern Caribbean. Until an airline actually schedules a route, though, book your trip based on today's access, not tomorrow's plans.

I'll keep an eye on this one and post an update once MOPT releases a construction timeline or an airline signs on for a route.
