Monteverde to Drake Bay in One Day Without Driving: What Actually Works

You can do it in one day. The 4 pm boat is the one that makes it work.

October 7, 2026 · 5 min read

Monteverde to Drake Bay is one of the hardest connections in Costa Rica. The cloud forest sits high in the mountains, and Drake Bay sits at the end of a river and a stretch of open ocean. No road finishes the trip, so a boat has to. You can still do it in one day without a rental car.

The boat sets your schedule

The public boat from Sierpe to Drake Bay leaves twice a day, at 11:30 am and 4 pm. The ride takes about an hour and ends with a wet landing on the beach. Fares run about $20 to $25 per person. The 11:30 boat gives you the afternoon at your lodge. The 4 pm boat lands you in Drake Bay close to sunset.

Confirm the times with your lodge before you book anything. Schedules shift, and your lodge arranges your seat anyway. Our guide to the Sierpe to Drake Bay boat ride covers what the trip feels like.

Why there is no 5 am shuttle

Most shuttles out of Monteverde run to the big tourist stops. Sierpe is not one of them. The drive takes about five and a half hours without stops, so a van has to leave before dawn to catch the morning boat. Most travelers hire a private van for this leg.

The math on an 8 am start

Leave Monteverde at 8 am, add five and a half hours of driving and a lunch stop, and you reach Sierpe around 2 pm. You miss the 11:30 boat and make the 4 pm boat with about an hour and a half to spare. That cushion covers a slow truck, a flat tire, or a long bakery stop. Do not cut it closer.

Your four options

Private van with an early start. Leave Monteverde around 5 am and you reach Sierpe in time for the 11:30 boat. A private van runs about $500 for the whole vehicle, so it makes sense for a group.

Shuttle at 8 am, then the 4 pm boat. This is the cheapest way if you can find a seat, and it works on the math above. Ask your lodge to confirm the boat seat before you leave Monteverde.

Fly. Sansa flies from San José to Drake Bay every day. A $190 seat is a fair price, but you still have to get from Monteverde to the airport, and that transfer costs extra. For a solo traveler, the flight often beats a private van.

Split the trip. Spend a night near Sierpe or Manuel Antonio, then take the 11:30 boat the next morning. You trade a day for a calm start and a full afternoon in Drake Bay.

Before you go

Tell your lodge which boat you will take so someone meets you at the beach. The 4 pm boat reaches Drake Bay around 5 pm, and sunset comes soon after. Bring a headlamp, a dry bag for your phone, and cash for the boat. Wear sandals for the wet landing.
