Monteverde or La Fortuna? How to Make the Most of 2 Full Days in Either
Two days in one spot is always the right call. Here's exactly what those two days look like in Monteverde and La Fortuna — and how to decide which one fits your trip.

The most common itinerary mistake in Costa Rica is moving too fast. One night somewhere, pack up, two hours on the road, unpack, repeat. By day four you've seen a lot of windshields and not much else.
Two full days in one destination changes everything. You stop rushing. You go deeper. You actually feel like you've been somewhere.
The two destinations most travelers are deciding between — Monteverde and La Fortuna. Both are extraordinary. Both are completely different. Here's how to make the most of two full days in either one.
Monteverde — Crisp Mountain Air, Misty Cloud Forest, Serene Wildlife
Monteverde sits at 1,440 meters above sea level. The temperature is 15-20°C most days. The cloud forest is exactly what it sounds like — forest that lives inside the clouds. It's quiet, green, and unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica.
Two days here works like this:
🌿 Hanging Bridges & Night Walk
Start with a guided hike across the hanging bridges in the Cloud Forest Reserve. Go early — the wildlife is most active in the morning and the mist on the canopy is something you'll remember. This is one of the best birdwatching spots in all of Central America. The Resplendent Quetzal — one of the most striking birds on earth — has been spotted here. A guide who knows where to look makes all the difference.
In the evening, book a night walk. The cloud forest after dark is a completely different place. Sleeping birds on branches. Red-eyed tree frogs. Stick insects. Kinkajous. A headlamp and a good guide and you'll see things that don't exist anywhere else.
🎿 Coffee Tour or Canopy Zip Line
Two options for your second day depending on what kind of traveler you are.
If you want something immersive and cultural — do a local coffee and chocolate tour. The farms around Monteverde and Santa Elena are genuine working operations. You follow the process from tree to cup or pod to bar. The guides are knowledgeable and the homemade chocolate at the end is better than anything you'll find in a café.
If you want adrenaline — the zip lines above the Monteverde canopy are world class. Flying above the cloud forest at speed with the Pacific and Atlantic both theoretically visible on a clear day is one of the more dramatic experiences in Costa Rica. Follow it with a tranquil hike through the Santa Elena Reserve — a quieter, less visited alternative to the main Cloud Forest Reserve with equally spectacular scenery.
La Fortuna — Iconic Volcano Views, Lush Rainforest, Deep Relaxation
La Fortuna is warmer, lower, and built around one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. Arenal Volcano rising above the rainforest. Waterfalls, hot springs, river safaris, wildlife. A completely different energy from Monteverde.
Two days here works like this:
🌋 Volcano, Waterfall & Hot Springs
Start your morning at Arenal Volcano National Park — the lava trail walks take you across hardened flows from the 1968 eruption with the volcano visible above. Go early for the clearest views before clouds roll in by midday.
Alternatively — or additionally if you have energy — La Fortuna Waterfall is a 70-meter drop into a cold blue pool. Get there before 9am. The 500-step descent and climb back up is real exercise but worth every step.
In the evening, go to the hot springs. This is not optional. Tabacón Grand Thermal Resort is world class — volcanic springs at multiple temperatures, beautifully landscaped, genuinely unlike anything else in the country. Dedicate the entire evening to it. You will not regret staying until closing.
🦥 Wildlife, River & Local Dining
Morning sloth-watching tour or a floating safari down the Peñas Blancas River. Both are quieter, slower, and completely different from the volcano-and-waterfall energy of day one. The river safari in particular is exceptional — you drift downstream spotting caimans, river otters, kingfishers, herons, and whatever else decides to show up. The pace is the point.
Wrap up with a proper dinner in town. Walk one block off the main tourist strip and the prices drop and the food gets better. Soda y Restaurante Rodríguez is worth knowing about. Red Frog Cafe too. Both are local, both are good, both have regulars for a reason.
How to Decide
Choose Monteverde if:
- ✓ You want a complete change of climate and landscape
- ✓ Cool mountain air and misty mornings appeal to you
- ✓ Birdwatching or wildlife is a priority
- ✓ You want the zip line experience above the clouds
- ✓ You prefer a quieter, more contemplative pace
Choose La Fortuna if:
- ✓ Hot springs are on your must-do list
- ✓ You want a warm, lush, dramatic landscape
- ✓ Volcano views and waterfall hikes are the priority
- ✓ You're coming from beach days and want to stay warm
- ✓ River safaris and jungle wildlife appeal to you
The honest answer — if you have the time, do both. Four days covers both destinations properly and the drive between them is genuinely beautiful.
Transfers and Logistics
Getting between destinations in Costa Rica is part of the experience when you plan it correctly and a significant headache when you don't.
The Monteverde to La Fortuna route has two options. The scenic back road through Tilarán cuts the drive to about 2.5 hours but requires 4WD and local knowledge of current road conditions. The paved route through San Ramón adds time but guarantees smooth travel regardless of what the weather has been doing.
Private transfers remove the decision entirely. You get picked up, driven comfortably, and dropped at your next accommodation. No navigation, no rental car negotiation, no surprise detour.
