The Best Hotels Near SJO Airport — For One Night Before or After Your Trip
Landing late or leaving early? These are the hotels that make the first and last night in Costa Rica easy.

Most travelers treat San José as a connection point — and they're right. But the first and last night of a Costa Rica trip still matters. A bad hotel choice near the airport means a rough start or a stressful exit.
These are the properties we recommend to clients every week. All within 10 minutes of Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). All with free airport shuttles. All reliable.
Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton — San José Airport
The most consistently recommended hotel in this corridor. Located just across the highway from SJO — literally five minutes by free shuttle that runs 24 hours a day.
What makes it work: free breakfast every morning, outdoor pool with parrots in the trees at dusk, 100 rooms ranging from standard doubles to family suites with kitchenettes, free WiFi, and staff who understand that travelers arriving from long international flights just want things to be simple.
Rates from around $104/night. Kids under 18 stay free using existing beds. Pet friendly.
Perfect for: First night arrivals, families, early morning departures, anyone who wants one less thing to think about.
Courtyard by Marriott — San José Airport Alajuela
Slightly further from the terminal — about 2.6 miles — but with the same free shuttle and a noticeably more polished feel. Think executive hotel rather than airport transit hotel.
The on-site restaurant Centro serves breakfast and evening meals with international cuisine and cocktails. Spacious rooms with separate living areas, 24-hour fitness center, outdoor pool, and a 24-hour business center.
Rates from around $122/night. No free breakfast included but the on-site restaurant is genuinely good. Hilton Honors points not applicable — this is Marriott Bonvoy.
Perfect for: Corporate travelers, couples, anyone who wants a proper dinner on their last night rather than airport food.
Fairfield by Marriott — San José Airport Alajuela
The value option in the Marriott family. Rated 8.7 Excellent across 1,732 reviews — one of the highest-rated airport hotels in the corridor. Fitness center, restaurant, bar, and lounge. Rates from around $100/night.
Perfect for: Value-conscious travelers who still want a reliable, well-reviewed property.
Holiday Inn Express — San José Airport (IHG)
8.6 Excellent across 3,033 reviews — the most reviewed airport hotel in the area, which tells you how often people use it. Outdoor pool, fitness center, restaurant. Rates from $114/night.
Perfect for: IHG Rewards members and travelers who want a brand they already know.
Our honest take on the airport hotel question
Don't stress too much about which one you pick. All four are reliable, all four have free shuttles, and all four exist for exactly one purpose — making the transit night easy.
The real question is what happens the morning after. If you're heading straight to La Fortuna or Arenal, leave by 7am. The drive is three to four hours and the waterfalls and hanging bridges are best before the afternoon rain. Hampton's free breakfast means you're fueled and out the door without paying for airport food.
If you're departing home, check your flight time. SJO security moves faster than most US airports but international check-in still requires arriving two hours early. The 24-hour shuttles on all four properties mean you can get there at 4am without calling a cab.
