Why We Book Through Fora (And What That Actually Means for You)

If you've been reading this site, you've probably noticed we mention Fora Travel here and there. We're certified Fora Travel Advisors, and it's worth explaining what that actually means, because it changes how we can help you, not just where the money comes from.

What Fora is, in plain terms

Fora is a network of independent travel advisors with negotiated relationships across thousands of hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, and airlines. Being part of that network means we can book your trip through the same channels a traditional travel agency would use, but without the overhead of running one ourselves.

Practically, that means access to room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in, and rates that often match or beat what you'd find booking direct, plus someone on the other end of WhatsApp if something goes sideways mid-trip.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

Anyone can Google "best hotels in Manuel Antonio" and get a list. What's harder to get on your own is a direct line to the property, someone who can call ahead and flag that it's your anniversary, or fix a booking mix-up on a Sunday instead of waiting on hold with a call center.

That's the actual value of working through an advisor network like Fora. It's not just inventory, it's leverage and relationships that build up over years of advisors sending clients to the same properties.

How we get paid

This part matters, so we're not going to bury it: when we book your hotel, flights, or tours through Fora, we earn a commission from the supplier, not from you. Your rate isn't marked up to cover it. It's built into how the hotel or tour company already prices their business β€” the same commission a traditional travel agency would earn, whether you book through us or not.

The only difference is whether that commission goes to an advisor who's actually going to answer your questions, or gets left on the table because you booked directly and nobody advocated for you.

What this means for a Costa Rica trip specifically

Costa Rica is our home base and our specialty, and most of what we do here doesn't run through Fora at all. It's local: guides we know personally, sodas we actually eat at, drivers who've never once been late. That's not something any booking platform sells.

But when a trip needs a flight, a rental car, or a hotel outside our own network of local contacts, Fora is how we handle it, at rates that are usually the same or better than booking it yourself, with someone accountable if anything needs fixing.
