Where to Stay When You Fly Into Liberia: Coco, Hermosa, Conchal, or Tamarindo

Two couples, one Airbnb, and a short list of beach towns. Here is how to pick.

October 6, 2026 · 5 min read

Flying into Liberia puts you about 30 minutes from the Gulf of Papagayo beaches and about 90 minutes from Tamarindo. You have more choices than you need, and most of them work. The real question is how you want to spend your evenings.

Playas del Coco: the closest and the most local

Coco sits about 30 minutes from the airport. It is a working fishing town with a real downtown, so restaurants, bars, dive shops, and boat tours all sit within walking distance of each other. Ticos and expats live here year-round, which keeps it from feeling like a resort strip.

The beach itself is not the prettiest in Guanacaste. Boats fill the bay and the sand runs dark. Use Coco for dinner and nightlife, and take a short drive to a better beach during the day.

Playa Hermosa: calm water and quiet nights

Hermosa sits close to Coco and is a calm, curved beach that rarely feels crowded. The water is good for swimming and snorkeling.

The restaurant list is short. Pick Hermosa if you want a quiet base and don't mind driving to Coco for dinner.

Brasilito and Playa Conchal: the relaxed middle

Conchal is the beach with white shell sand and turquoise water. Brasilito is the small fishing village beside it, with simple restaurants and a calm main street. Expect about an hour from the airport.

This area fits you if you want pretty beaches, a slow evening, and no party scene. Nightlife here means a cold beer at a beach bar. Flamingo and Potrero sit close by if you want a marina or a quieter cove.

Tamarindo: the most to do and the most people

You asked whether it is too touristy. It is touristy, and it is not rough. Tamarindo has the widest choice of restaurants and bars in the area, plus surf lessons and sunset catamarans. It is the only town here with nightlife every night.

Use the main strip for dinner and spend your days at Playa Grande, Avellanas, or Conchal. Our honest Tamarindo review explains how to make it work, and our two-day Tamarindo trip report shows what we actually did.

How we would split the week

Spend the first three or four nights in Coco or Hermosa. You land, you reach your Airbnb in 30 minutes, and you eat dinner by sunset. Then drive to Tamarindo for the second half. If Tamarindo feels like too much, pick Brasilito instead.

Two bases beat one. Four people split a rental car easily, and the drive between the two bases is about an hour and a half.

Day trips from any base

Rincón de la Vieja National Park sits about an hour from the airport. Take a 4x4 if you plan to drive the park road. Diving and snorkeling boats leave from Coco. A sunset catamaran from Tamarindo is worth the evening. Playa Grande has leatherback turtle nesting from October through February.

Before you land

Rent the car at the airport and book an Airbnb with parking. Plan to reach your Airbnb before dark. The sun sets around 6 pm all year, and many of the roads between towns have no lights.

Hiking trails matter more to you than beaches? Our 4-day Liberia plan for a hiking couple covers that trip.
