Which Reserve in Monteverde? Santa Elena or the Monteverde Cloud Forest
Pick one reserve, get to the gate early, and save the afternoon for Selvatura.

Monteverde has two cloud forest reserves worth your morning. You have two days and a late-morning arrival, so you need a plan that fits. The short answer is to pick one reserve, go early, and spend your arrival afternoon at Selvatura.
Pick one reserve, not both
Each reserve needs three to four hours to do well. Hike one right after the other and you rush both, finish tired, and see less. The wildlife is cloud forest wildlife in both places, so a second walk adds little.
Santa Elena or Monteverde
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the big name. It has about 13 kilometers of trails, a visitor center, and the most visitors. Adults pay around $25 or more. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is smaller and community-run, and it costs about $18 for foreign adults. It is quieter, its trails can run muddy, and it has an observation tower. Both open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Prices change, so check before you go.
With a tight schedule, we pick Santa Elena. It takes walk-ins most days, but January sits in peak season. Reserve a spot ahead or arrive at 7 am. Santa Elena sits about 7 kilometers from town, so ask your hotel to book a taxi the night before.
The quetzal question
Resplendent quetzals live in both reserves. Early morning gives you the best chance, and a guide with a spotting scope helps. January falls before nesting season, so a sighting takes some luck. A guided walk lasts about three hours and is the best way to find one.
Do not flip your days
Do not hike on arrival and push Selvatura to the next day. Birds are most active early in the morning, so a noon hike wastes the best part of the reserve. Keep the reserve for the morning of day two.
Your arrival afternoon at Selvatura
Selvatura is open from 7 am to 4 pm. Zip line departures run at 8:30 am, 11 am, and 1 pm. If you land at 11:30 and still need to check in and eat, the 1 pm zip line is tight. The hanging bridges are the better fit. You walk them on your own, they take about an hour and a half, and you can start whenever you arrive. If your shuttle runs late, the bridges save the afternoon.
Walk around Santa Elena town in the evening and eat dinner there.
January in Monteverde
January is dry season and peak season. Expect cool mornings and wind. Pack a windbreaker and closed-toe shoes with good grip. Book Selvatura and your reserve spot before you arrive.
